There’s a new yarn shop in town! (aka the Yarn Rant)
Posted by Niki on Sunday, September 10th, 2006
And it’s super cute! It’s called Knit Picky, and the people who worked there were very, very nice. It’s about 20 minutes from the KnitNik homestead, making it yet the 3rd yarn shop in town, all of which are 15-20 minutes away. We’ll have to see if this town can support a 3rd yarn shop – I’m truthfully not sure if it can. I’m also not sure yet if this will be my favorite, as I’m completely partial to the one around the corner from work, and vehemently opposed to the other one in town (those of you who live in the Winston-Salem area know exactly what I’m talking about!).
Now for the rant part: They had a good selection, though I hope it gets bigger, and starts to include some “unusual” stuff, specifically some hand-painted sock yarn. Or even some Opal – why can’t anyone here carry Opal? I don’t know what it is about this town and Trekking and Regia, with some occasional Lana Grossa thrown in. That’s about all you’ll ever find. And there are just so many colors of those that I need. I need Lorna’s Laces, Claudia Handpaints (or so I’m told), and Socks that Rock. I need soft touch, riotous colors, and lots to choose from. I’m tired of Berroco – it’s in every yarn shop in town, and it’s horrendously overpriced for the yardage. There is Noro, but unless I’m felting, and want to shave the item multiple times, I’m going to skip the good colors in favor of a better quality yarn. Cascade and Lamb’s Pride are good, but don’t fill up your shelves with them. And I know winter is coming, but some lightweight (non froufrou!) yarns would be really nice. We’re not all about sweaters all the time.
OK, rant over. Sanity returns. Well, maybe not. It’s Sunday night, and tomorrow begins another week of craziness at school. Hayley has 3 days of afterschool activities. Shea has 3 days of work. Not all of these days overlap, so there will be oodles of running this week. This week also leads into the heaviest birthday week in our whole family – Shea, my nephew Cole, and Deb (aka OtherMom), all within a week, as well as my Dad and Deb’s anniversary. Needless to say there will be partying next weekend, but there also needs to be present-buying this week. Oh, and also sometime in the next week is Tricia’s 33rd birthday. I’m not supposed to reveal the date, but bribes of yarn and Ben & Jerry’s will be accepted.
Knitting content? Oh, there must be knitting content? OK. OTN right now – birthday present socks (recipient is a secret, but I will reveal later) out of cool Jojoland yarn from stash. I am still not done with the Simple Stripes socks, but will finish them up once these others are done. The Lotus Blossom Tank is still hanging out at 2/3 done, and the ArtFibers sweater is pouting in the knitting basket, as it’s been ignored for nigh unto 2 months at this point. Oh – and I did break my yarn fast. I officially went 117 days without buying yarn, then proceeded to buy it twice this week. Just making up for lost time!
