My porridge is too cold (in which I am very parenthetical)

I’m in a bit of a knitting funk.  And probably a life funk too, if I am candid.  It’s just been a few (well, several) weeks since I’ve felt really good, and not overly tired, and just enthused about much of anything.  My knitting reflects this – various projects in states of neglect, casting on and ripping out multiple times (5 on the LL, 2 so far on the HandJive) without really accomplishing anything.  I did finish up a Christmas present (which shall remain nameless and imageless, since the giftee will read this!), but I can’t seem to focus on any one thing for more than about 10 minutes.  I got both the Vogue Stitchionary 1 & 2 in the mail the other day, and realized that so many of those patterns would lend themselves to socks.  Heck, the swatches even kind of looked like socks.  Then I got to the problem of too many choices.  I knocked out the ones whose multiples were not conducive to socks (like a multiple of 18+1, could make for some sock difficulty), then started on one.  Stupid, inattentive me didn’t think about the fact that these patterns were for a flat piece, and I was knitting in the round, so when it said purl the odd rows, I should in fact knit them.  That was a funny looking piece.  And too big.  So I tried it on smaller needles – still looked funny, because I was doing it wrong!  Back to the drawing board, and go through the patterns all over again.  All 256 of them.  Try another, too big again.  Eek.  Maybe it was the yarn.  I’ve been playing with this same LL Mother Lode since August, trying it out with different patterns – Frequency (cables, too stretched out), Undulating Rib (looks great until you put it on, then just looks crooked), etc.  I’ve come to the conclusion that this yarn just does not like me.  I pulled out some beautiful purple Hand Jive that was acquired on our trip to California last spring, and decided that it would be perfect for the Lombard Street socks.  It would be very cool to have Lombard Street socks in yarn bought not too far from there!  So far I have the picot edge done, and am about to start the pattern.  If my luck stays like it has been, they will be too big.  Or too small.  Or just yucky.  Maybe I should name this Goldilocks syndrome!  Eventually I’ll get them just right.

On a happy note, we’re going to the fair this week, and I’ll get to see my favorite band.  I need to cast on some boring old socks so I’ll have some good mindless knitting at the concert!
