Bittersweet October

My favorite new autumn quote:
When the bold branches
Bid farewell to rainbow leaves -
Welcome wool sweaters.
– B. Cybrill

And another:
Bittersweet October.  The mellow, messy, leaf-kicking, perfect pause between the opposing miseries of summer and winter. – Carol Bishop Hipps

These express my feelings so well, even if they are a bit cheesy.  Autumn is my absolute favorite time of year, especially here in NC, where it is a true season this year.  We have had a few weeks of glorious color, and the oak tree next door (my all-time favorite) is nearly in its full glory today.  I’ve been bugging Shea to take a picture, but she didn’t understand why I wanted a picture of “a tree”.  It’s not just a tree – and I’m not poetic enough to describe what it is, but suffice to say that it warms my heart to see it every day, or at least until the leaves fall, which will probably happen in the next few days.  People here are already complaining about the cold, but I’m just looking forward to pulling out the sweaters – I love me the sweaters (kind of like some people and shoes).  And turning off the air conditioning – yay!  I will admit that the bedroom floor is a bit chilly in the morning, but if I’m too lazy to put on my slippers, then I deserve it.  Plus, it helps wake me up!  I love snuggling up on the couch under a warm afghan, or piling on the covers at night, with my warm flannel jammies and my favorite heat source lying next to me.  I love fires in the fireplace and cool breezes that rattle the windows.  I will also love the time change this weekend – an extra hour in the mornings will do me a world of good.

Still no pictures of the llama farm from Sue – hint, hint!  Here, however, is a picture of the gorgeous llama, alpaca, and silk blend yarn I bought, which I believe is destined to become a beautiful shawl.  I haven’t been knitting much (really), because I’ve had a few really bad weeks of arthritis.  Add to that 5 weeks now of a cough that just won’t go away, and I’m not really doing a whole lot of anything!  The school nurse today actually suggested I ask my doctor if it might be whooping cough.  I read up on it, and found out that at this point they wouldn’t do much to treat it anyway, so unless it just hangs on, I’ll probably let it ride.  I’m a little tired of the comments though – I either hear that “that sounds good” or “that sounds awful”.  Make up your minds, or just don’t comment on it!
